What Hillary’s Concession Speech Means To Me
On Tuesday November Eighth, the United States elected its forty-fifth president. To the shock of many, the new president-elect is Donald J. Trump. The next morning, Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, delivered her concession speech. In her speech, Clinton called her defeat “painful”, and thanked her supporters for everything that they have done for her. She then went on to say that she accepts the result of the election and that as a country, we have to give Trump a chance to lead the country, and that we should try to unify as a country.
This concession speech, is the epitome of graceful defeat. The Clinton campaign has portrayed a Trump Presidency as something post-apocalyptic. This and many aggressions from the Trump campaign have made this a very disastrous election on both sides. Clinton’s speech of accepting a Trump presidency and giving Trump a chance to lead is a refreshing take on the results of this election amidst the riots and flag-burning that some people have decided to engage in.
Hillary Clinton’s concession speech is a model for how we should act during this post election season. I think that that as a country, we should discover, focus on and cultivate what makes us similar and not what makes us different.
So as the holiday season approaches, and we prepare to spend time with family, some of whom may not agree with us politically, we should follow Mrs. Clinton’s lead and not start World War Three with that drunk uncle at Thanksgiving, or that friend from school whose political views we might not agree with. Instead, we should stay graceful during this holiday season and focus on unity, while staying true to our personal and political values.
